In the same way that rain makes you take a deep breath and go “ahhhh”, so does a trip to Byron Bay. It’s the perfect place to come for rest, rejuvenation and relaxation.

After where to find the best places to eat in Byron, the next most popular question I get asked is where’s the best place for a massage and facial. So I’ve done the hard yards and reviewed all the day spas in the area to help you choose the perfect spa experience for you.

ZEN AND WELLNESS: Gaia Retreat and Spa

Earthy and tranquil, Gaia is the spa to go to for some real zen. The relaxation starts as soon as you arrive with the Balinese-inspired property nestled amongst tropical gardens, and sweeping views of the hinterland. What I love about this spa is that it’s beautiful but there’s also real expertise when it comes to holistic treatments, and warmth from the people that work here. I had a pregnancy massage with Angelica which was heaven as the bed was comfortable, room was warm and she applied just the right amount of pressure. This was followed by a facial with Brigitte who is extremely knowledgable in the area of skincare, organics and natural treatments. Having worked closely on the development of Gaia’s signature certified organic range she knew everything about each ingredient and its benefits, so I knew I was in good hands. If you’re after a facial that’s effective but 100% natural and organic (note that many products claim to be these things but they’re not!) then you’ll love this one.  The facial massage was a highlight causing me to drift in and out of a dream-like state.

Come here for: The beautiful surroundings; earthy, warm staff; wellness and zen; natural, organic facials; and massages by experienced therapists.

Tip: Arrive earlier so you can enjoy the beautiful outdoor pool and spa facilities. I also recommend booking in for an organic lunch prepared by the in-house chef to complete the wellness experience.

Where: It’s about a 20 minute drive from Byron and around 2 minutes from Harvest Cafe in Newrybar which is great because to truly unwind, you want to escape the frantic pace and traffic of the touristy town. 933 Fernleigh Rd Brooklet.

The spa at Rae’s on Wategos.

For luxury and privacy, join the A-list at the boutique moroccan themed spa at Rae’s on Wategos. The space itself is very intimate and it’s easy to lose yourself in the lovely interior featuring mosaic tiles and candles. I had a pregnancy massage which was excellent, but facials are the big draw card with expert facialist Marionne de Candia at the helm. She has decades experience tending to celebs, jetsetters and locals and her combination of massage, reiki and own boutique skincare products will leave you looking radiant.

Come here for: Luxury and privacy; expert facials; and post-treatment cocktails overlooking the famous Watego’s beach.

Tip: Take a dip in the lovely Rae’s pool or indulge in a cocktail in the restaurant upstairs.

Where: Right on the famous Watego’s Beach, about 5 minutes drive from Byron town. 6-8 Marine Pde, Byron Bay.

Seclusion, tranquility and amazing views at Botanica Retreat and Spa.

Now, I bet you haven’t heard of this one because it’s a real local secret. This gorgeous spa is nestled deep in the rainforest at Wilson’s Creek with spectacular views of cliffs, ancient trees and waterfalls as far as the eye can see. Apart from being secluded and in the the heart of nature, you can book this place out all to yourself for a romantic getaway or girls day. There’s a pool, spa and sauna, and they’ll light the outdoor fire if you’re there in the late afternoon. I recommend booking in for a massage, yoga and organic meal by the Italian chef Stefano, using produce grown on the property. This place is very Byron, and very special.

Come here for: Total privacy and seclusion; a nature and rainforest experience; wellness and zen; yoga and massage; organic meal.

Tip: You’ll go through small creeks and rainforest to get here so it might be best to book a day experience so you’re not driving back in the night.

Where: About 45 minutes drive from Byron town. Upper Wilsons Creek Rd, Wilsons Creek.

The rainforest walk and pool at the Byron at Byron.

A lot of locals come here to recharge and if you’re travelling with the family, you may have already ended up at the Byron at Byron, which is the main resort in the region. They do a really good pregnancy massage here so I’m sure their other massage options are great too. As it’s part of a hotel, there’s a large pool area to sun yourself before or after your treatment, and a beautiful rainforest walk that’s part of the property.

Come here for: resort style pampering as a couple or with the girls; the pool; massage.

Tip: Take a rainforest walk before your treatment to get in the zone before your pampering.

Where: About a 5 minute drive from Byron town, near Suffolk Park. 77-97 Broken Head Rd Byron Bay.
